Description:

Because of its geographic position and the economic opportunities California offered, San Francisco received many Chinese immigrants. This image of San Francisco harbor includes a new addition: a mockery of the Statue of Liberty, then under construction [she wasn't brought to NYC until 1886]. The suggested statue for San Francisco is a stereotypical Chinese man, with vices emanating from his head, an opium pipe in his hand, and rats at his feet.
